A short-term radon test takes 48-96 hours. Here is what the full timeline looks like from scheduling to certified result in hand.
For real estate transactions: most buyers can have a certified result within 4-5 days of scheduling.
The Full Timeline: Scheduling to Result
Here is the complete sequence from first call to written report.
- Schedule the test. Same-day scheduling is available in most of SafeAir’s service area. Coordinate access with the listing agent or plan to meet at the home.
- Closed-house prep. The property needs closed-house conditions before the device is placed. All windows and exterior doors must be closed, and the HVAC should run normally. This prep period lasts at least 12 hours before device placement.
- Device placement. A SafeAir technician arrives and places the test device at the lowest livable level of the home. Placement typically takes 30-45 minutes.
- The 48-hour test period. The device collects air samples for 48-96 hours. Normal household activity continues during this window.
- Device retrieval. SafeAir returns to collect the device when the test period ends.
- Lab analysis. The device goes to an accredited laboratory. Turnaround is approximately 48 hours after the lab receives the device.
- Your certified result. A written report is delivered in pCi/L.
Total time from scheduling to result: typically 4-5 days when closed-house conditions are met on schedule.
A short-term radon test takes 48-96 hours. Adding closed-house prep time (12 hours minimum) and lab analysis (approximately 48 hours after the lab receives the device), most homeowners receive their certified result within 4-5 days of scheduling.

Short-Term vs Long-Term Tests
The right test type depends on why you are testing.
Short-term test
- Duration: 48-96 hours
- Best for: real estate transactions, initial residential screening, post-renovation checks
- Result turnaround: approximately 48 hours after the lab receives the device
- Total time to result: typically 4-5 days from scheduling
- Accepted for: real estate transactions, mitigation contractor baselines, EPA-approved initial screening
Long-term test
- Duration: 90 days minimum, up to 1 year
- Best for: establishing a true operational baseline, capturing seasonal variation, confirming an elevated short-term result before committing to mitigation
- Not appropriate for real estate transactions
Which test should you choose?
- Buying or selling a home: short-term test only. Learn more about radon testing for real estate transactions.
- Want the most accurate long-term picture: long-term test.
- Had an elevated short-term result and want to confirm before scheduling mitigation: long-term test.

What If I Have a Tight Real Estate Contingency Deadline?
Contact SafeAir as early in the contingency period as possible. Do not wait until day 8 of a 10-day window. The timeline for a short-term test is fixed at a minimum of 48 hours, and lab analysis adds another 48 hours on top of that.
Same-day scheduling is available across most of SafeAir’s service area. SafeAir can accommodate weekend device placements and early-morning retrieval to make the most of available time.
If the contingency window is genuinely too short for a 48-hour test, both parties can agree to a contingency extension. This is common in Georgia real estate transactions and usually requires only a written addendum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a radon test be done in less than 48 hours?
No. EPA-approved short-term radon tests require a minimum of 48 hours to collect a reliable air sample. Tests shorter than 48 hours do not produce results acceptable for real estate transactions or certified use.
What happens if the test is interrupted by a window left open or a door propped?
A brief interruption of a few minutes is unlikely to significantly affect the result. An extended period of open windows or doors should be reported to SafeAir. Depending on the duration and degree of air exchange, the test may need to be restarted. It is better to restart the test than to submit a compromised result.
